Prodigal Son 04:33
I can feel the way it moves The beast that lies within me Silent in its painful roar The beast cannot be tamed My end is its beginning Laying waste to all that was before Can you hear me scream? Wake me from this endless dream Blood on the streets Crimson pools wash over me I’m drowning in my fears Can’t live this way forever I’d sacrifice my heart to slay the beast Dive deep into my soul Find all the lonely places Plunge the knife inside and watch it bleed I want to hear it scream Banish fear and loneliness Rise above it all Spirit wash all over me Stalking my days Haunting my nights Setting ablaze All in my sights Caught in its clutches Nowhere to run I must return I am the Prodigal Son

We face the fear of the unknown The future looks bare, so stark and alone It makes no difference who you know The seeds of death don’t care where they grow Seasons of waiting Reckless dictating Fire In The Sky We search for truth behind the lies We’re told we are safe behind our thin disguise The strongest weapons, the greatest minds Can’t keep us safe from ourselves All we do is fight No hands to hold Dying alone Fire In The Sky We can choose to sow the seeds of hope instead of fear Water the souls of the weak with our hearts The more we stare at our screens the less we know what’s even real We’re meant to go higher Unplug the wires Put it down Reckless dictating Contaminating Fire In The Sky

In the whisper of the winds I hear her call my name Across the endless emptiness Come to me again I rush into her sweet embrace Dance upon her shores Taste the clean and salty air Breathe the ocean’s roar As the dark sea swells, stars flicker on the waves All my hopes and fears, it’s here I can be brave Inner silence in this moment Time is standing still No greater force to defeat Than my own stubborn will Surround me like I’ve never known Safe from all the terror On the edge of everything I can see forever Through the rising tide and the restless winds of change All my hopes and fears, it’s here I can be brave Prisoner Of The Dark Anger in my soul Let me stay with you awhile Let me lose control Searching for a sign Wandering alone I put before you all my dreams Let the sunrise make me whole I throw myself into the storm of it all Wash away this emptiness as I fall into your arms Prisoner Of The Dark Anger in my soul Let me stay with you awhile Let me lose control Searching for a sign Wandering alone I put before you all my dreams Let the sunrise make me whole Prisoner Of The Dark

Full moon tonight No dreams in black and white She paints the colors in your dreams and you come alive Red dress and raven hair Weaves magic everywhere She’ll set your heart and soul on fire Lady Moonshine She’ll take you by the hand Her wish is your command Whisper promises in your mind Your skin electric Two minds connected Strange scenes from another place, another time Lady Moonshine You know you should run away Just let her go But you’re so far gone, you’ve lost your way back home You’re floating in darkness You search for the light But she’s twisted your mind, captured your heart tonight One kiss is not enough You’re addicted to her touch You know it can’t be what it seems But it’s more than just a dream Lady Moonshine

Somewhere drifting in the quiet whisper of the winds Is a message I’ve been sending out for years All my dreams and the places that I want to go Just broadcast like a song on the radio Is anybody listening? Does anybody care? A wandering soul a troubled mind I’m searching everywhere There has to be a place Where all our dreams are safe Castle of Dreams All my desires Locked in your rooms Burning inside your fires my love I see what could be with you Set me free Castle of Dreams If there is such a place I need to be brave and throw myself into the storm Be willing to fall to build myself again Run through the valleys and fields Fight through the currents and tides Crawl through the trenches of darkness and fear Weave through the fabric of time There has to be a place Where all our dreams are safe Castle of Dreams All my desires Locked in your rooms Burning inside your fires my love As the sun rises I can see I’ve been blind all of this time There’s a spirit inside me that I’ve always denied every time I tried alone The castle of dreams is there It’s not high on a hill it’s everywhere It’s inside of you and me Listen to your heart Castle of Dreams All my desires Locked in your rooms Burning inside your fires my love I see what could be with you Set me free Castle of Dreams Let it be Castle of Dreams

As long as I can remember that little voice inside Has filled my head with questions, fantasies and lies Days and months turn into years adrift in space and time Grasping onto anything with no design I’m sick of wasting time I’ve only got one life I’ve got to find a way to face my fears Fill the empty spaces Quiet the angry voices Be the master of my own desires Step Into The Fire Storms will rage, the sea untamed and winds of change will blow In darkest days, you’ll feel the weight heavy and cold Out of the depths, it steals your breath and turns your veins to ice The great unknown, you stand alone paralyzed If I could be so bold There’s always a hand to hold We’re all searching for that place together Across the endless sea In scattered stars our destiny Just this moment now forever Step Into The Fire

Rising Sons 04:12
They walk the streets in costume merchandise Modern day clowns of our suburban lives Shackled in paradigms of fantasy Creating their own false reality And the blood is running cold For the brave and the bold As they entertain with guns Beware the Rising Sons A taste of candy lures the young from home Chemically bound thereafter to the throne As backstreet kings wage war for turf and pride Our graveyards swell from tears and open wide For their brains have turned to dust And love’s now only lust As they entertain with guns Beware the Rising Sons If you would change your colors on the inside And judge not what you see with your naked eyes Open your mind to another point of view There’s a seed of a man just waiting to break through You hear the stories told of yesterday When you could be a man and turn away But every day the faces disappear And few remain to challenge hate and fear The blood is running cold For the brave and the bold As they entertain with guns Beware the Rising Sons Beware the Rising Sons Beware the Rising Sons

When your heart is heavy, broken and drained And it feels like all is gone When you’re lost in the dark, wandering alone Open your eyes Look to the light, and Find your way to me Find your way to me When life has beat you down, empty inside Hurt you in ways no one believes When you’re just a shadow of the person you were Give me your fears I am waiting here, so Find your way to me Find your way to me You may think I’m hiding from you You don’t feel me anymore I’m not flying high above you I’m waiting here outside your door I treasure you like gold, brighter than the sky I would wait for you forever Wipe those tears away Take my hand and try To see yourself with my eyes Tear off your disguise, and Find your way to me Find your way to me

I Believe 04:51
Late at night when I’m all alone You come to me You lift me up, fill my soul You take the pain away When all is lost and I can’t see You show me the light You ask me, oh yes I believe When I’m down and all seems lost You talk to me You help me see through the dark You send me on my way If not for all you’ve given me I’d not be here today You ask me again, oh yes I believe Yes I believe in all of you And the power that we hold together Yes I believe in all we can do Se let’s join together, let’s all stand together And try and remember why we’re here and believe Yes I believe in all of you And the power that we hold together Yes I believe in all we can do Se let’s join together, let’s all stand together Yes I believe in all of you And the power that we hold together Yes I believe in you And the power that we hold together We hold the power It’s right in our hands

about

For over 40 years, I have been the primary songwriter and vocalist for the melodic hard rock/metal band NIGHTRIDER as well as sharing rhythm and lead guitar duties. The members of that band are the best friends anyone could hope to have in their lifetime. We literally grew up together from teenagers to adults with kids and now even grand-children. In 2019 we released our 3rd album “Rock Machine” (also see “The Mystic One” and “Archives 1980 - 1984”).

When Covid hit in 2020, I decided to start work on a solo album. The songs I wrote initially sounded very much like NIGHTRIDER material, but over time I allowed myself the freedom to go a bit further production wise…to let the songs go where they wanted to go. As many artists will attest to, we are often just the vehicle for these songs which somehow seem to write themselves while we go about our day and even when we sleep. I found the freedom liberating in an increasingly chaotic world amidst the pandemic, natural disasters, and political dysfunction on all sides.

At the same time, I threw myself into learning the art of recording and mixing music and how to build and acoustically treat a proper studio. Over the last two years, I built and rebuilt my studio four times, moved from NH to CT, recorded, mixed and then remixed the music on three entirely different digital audio workstation (DAW) programs. To say this album has been a labor of love is an understatement.

Why am I choosing to release this album under the name TAVYRN? In my home in the White Mountains of NH, I had a “mancave” in my basement with a full bar that I called the “Tips Up Tavern” (as any good skier knows, keeping the tips of your skis up is key). It was where we loved to socialize, share drinks, music and good times with friends.

I decided I wanted a musical outlet where I had 100% artistic freedom, but that would also allow and encourage participation by other musicians. A virtual tavern if you will (the misspelling frankly looks cool and makes it easier to find in search engines all truth be told). On this release, NIGHTRIDER bandmate Bert Plante played bass on two tracks and Ken Merrifield added a 2nd lead guitar to a track. NIGHTRIDER drummer Brent Enman was a daily confidant in all aspects of production (see his own solo releases “Wildman”, “Mojo Castle Sessions” and his “Retromatic” series). I can’t envision having recorded this album without his daily advice, guidance and inspiration. On future TAVYRN releases, I hope to invite more musicians in for a drink, some laughs, and some fun.

Let’s face it, none of us are making much money here…anyone still writing and recording music in 2022 does it because it is part of their soul. A life not writing and recording music for me would be a life in black and white, a life with no taste or smell, a life suffering even to breathe. It is who I am and who I have always been since I started writing simple songs when I was 13.

Which brings me to the lyrics on this album. When I step back and look at the collection of 10 songs, there is clearly a theme of darkness ultimately defeated, of triumph over despair, of belief over cynicism. The “dark” cover of this album is my attempt to capture how many of us felt over the last couple years, and also reflects some of my own anxiety stepping out alone with my first solo album.

I have no idea if anyone will even listen to this album and I’m not sure that even matters to me. I needed to do this, I needed to write these songs. The process kept me sane over the last couple years of insanity..

For those who take the time to immerse themselves in it, know that this album is the best I can do, this is me to my very soul.

Come on in everyone…the TAVYRN is open!.
